Synopsis: Beneath the light of a full moon, the Nightbloods and Seers are dancing. They are dancing as they await another Awakening, a dream that defines every witch’s destiny.
It doesn’t matter that the coven is cheering and anticipating her turn into womanhood, because Calli doesn’t want any of it. She doesn’t want to see the face of the hired hand Isaiah, nor does she desire the pursuits of a very determined Nightblood as she runs from a future with the Ordinary help. She knows that regardless of whether she taps into forbidden magic or not, an Awakening is rumored to hold ultimate power over the Seer who dreams it.
While the other Seers her age are given to their parties, their enchantments, and the lust of Nightblood suitors, Calli must choose how she'll endure the worst of her visions. There may be a way to survive her sleep, but she's not sure she can defeat the truth that will find her when she’s wide awake.
Does real love even stand a chance against the darkest of magic?
Review: It is time for Calli’s Awakening, a day she has dreaded for years since she saw the horror beneath the glamour. However, it is Calli’s lot to experience the Awakening as it is her people’s destiny for all females. The Seers and Nightbloods come together to celebrate Calli’s dream which will write her future. Calli’s different from other Seers since she doesn’t indulge in the parties, magical enchantments, and taking Nightblood lovers. She sees the world differently and doesn’t want to give in to her visions which pull at her while asleep. THE SHORT LIFE OF SPARROWS is told from two perspectives – Calli the Seer and Isaiah the Ordinary. Ordinaries are non-Seers and non-Nightbloods. Isaiah took a summer job in their town as a handyman for Calli’s aunt, Lil. THE SHORT LIFE OF SPARROWS was a little slow to get into at first, but I was well rewarded for my persistence. The characters are so well-rounded and the relationships between them are substantial. I got caught up in their emotional discoveries and the breathtakingly unique world the author created. THE SHORT LIFE OF SPARROWS is more a story about the magic of people than people with magic. Both sweet and bittersweet, THE SHORT LIFE OF SPARROWS will touch your heart.
