Synopsis: Complicated does not begin to describe Arcadia Bell's life right now: unnatural magical power, another brush with death, and a murderous mother who's not only overbearing but determined to take permanent possession of Cady's body. Forced to delve deep into the mystery surrounding her own birth, Cady must uncover which evil spell her parents cast during her conception…and how to reverse it. Fast. As she and her lover Lon embark on a dangerous journey through her magical past, Lon's teenage son Jupe sneaks off for his own investigation. Each family secret they uncover is darker than the last, and Cady, who has worn many identities—Moonchild, mage, fugitive—is about to add one more to the list.
Series: Kindling the Moon (1), Summoning the Night (2), Leashing the Tempest (2.5), Binding the Shadows (3), Banishing the Dark (4)
Review: Cady is fighting off her mother’s influence and attempts to take over her body at night. As Cady and Lon try to retrace her mother’s journey to create the Moonchild spell in order to undo it, Cady learns more about who her parents really were. While Cady and Lon are traveling all over, Jupe has taken it upon himself to find out what he can locally. With every new discovery, Cady’s past becomes clear and it’s not a pleasant journey. Battling enemies on multiple fronts, Cady’s learned some new tricks. But will these lead her straight into her mother’s grasp?
Reading BANISHING THE DARK was bittersweet for me because I absolutely love the characters and the ingenious world the author created, but this is the last book in the series. I really enjoyed learning more about Cady’s mother and Cady’s untapped powers. I thought the title, BANISHING THE DARK, was definitely fitting. This book focused mainly on Cady, Lon, and Jupe, with a few new secondary characters who added some humor and danger to the story. I truly enjoyed BANISHING THE DARK and I hope the author returns to Cady someday (in another novella, perhaps??). If you haven’t read the Arcadia Bell series yet, now’s the time!
