Synopsis: 1885. Anne Stanbury - Committed to a lunatic asylum, having been deemed insane and therefore unfit to stand trial for the crime of which she is indicted. But is all as it seems?

Edgar Stanbury - the grieving husband and father who is torn between helping his confined wife recover her sanity, and seeking revenge on the woman who ruined his life.

Dr George Savage - the well respected psychiatrist, and chief medical officer of Bethlem Royal Hospital. Ultimately, he holds Anne's future wholly in his hands.

The Medea Complex tells the story of a misunderstood woman suffering from insanity in an era when mental illnesses' were all too often misdiagnosed and mistreated. A deep and riveting psychological thriller set within an historical context, packed full of twists and turns, The Medea Complex explores the nature of the human psyche: what possesses us, drives us, and how love, passion, and hope for the future can drive us to insanity.

Review: In 1885, the Stanbury family was been struck by tragedy. Lady Anne, in a fit of postpartum psychosis (called puerperal mania back then), has murdered her infant son. She is committed to a highbrow insane asylum and is considered unfit to stand trial for her crime. Her husband, Edgar Stanbury is beside himself over losing his son and filled with rage toward his wife. What is the truth behind this family insanity?

THE MEDEA COMPLEX is a convoluted and twisted tale of insanity and revenge. There are many things which happened in the story which could not be accomplished today simply due to scientific advances. I felt the treatment of the women in the asylum was despicable and deplorable, but it was standard in this era. I liked the story, the plot was well devised and definitely not for the faint of heart. There were some editorial/language issues, but overall the author was able to capture this time period well. The characters were very polarizing and the hidden motives captivating. THE MEDEA COMPLEX was an intriguing story exploring the nature of the human psyche.
