Synopsis: Years ago, demons were forced out of the earth’s realm by a band of supernatural fighters, banished from the place and its people in the aftermath of a horrific war. It should’ve ended there – would’ve – if not for the final demon’s claw snagging on the open portal. What felt like victory became only a reprieve, the winning warriors understanding that the tear would spread, and the demons eventually would escape exile. It was only a matter of time, and a need for future defense – a question of genetics and essences, magic and power.
Now centuries later, a new army must bind together – one of teenagers with inhuman potentials and abilities…
AJ went to bed Sunday night an average teenage girl, clumsy to a fault and athletically lacking. So when she wakes up Monday morning with super-strength, she does what any rational person would do: She goes into denial. When a smoking hot guy in a suit shows up, rambling about the end of the war and demons spilling through some kind of rift, she refuses to listen, telling herself he’s insane. Except weird things just won’t quit happening, and the guy keeps popping up in her life, trying to explain the changes suddenly happening within her. Is she crazy, or is this guy… not so crazy after all?
Author Bio: Connie L. Smith spends far too much time with her mind wandering in fictional places. She reads too much, likes to bake, and will be forever sad that she doesn't have fairy wings. And that she can't swing dance. When she isn't reading or writing, there's a good chance she's goofing off with her amazing, wonderful, incredible, fabulous nieces and nephew, or listening to music that is severely outdated. She has her BA from Northern Kentucky University in Speech Communication and History (she doesn't totally get the connection either) and likes to snap photos. Oh, and she likes apples a whole big bunch.
Interview: Q. Please tell us about the inspiration for your current release.
I have a habit of mentally adding characters into TV shows, movies, books… Sometimes these characters are from other works – I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve said, “They need someone like Rincewind right here…” – but other times it’s someone of my own making. This is pretty much how AJ came about, and the story kind of built around her.
Q. How did writing this book affect you?
This may sound a bit lame, but it was a really empowering experience. It was something I took control of and did, creating over 300 pages of characters and storyline. To be honest, when I started writing the book, I didn’t even know if I’d end up finishing it, not knowing if I’d be able to do it or if I’d just give up. Now, book two is waiting for further revisions, and book three is probably a little over half-written, along with a prequel novella. Like I said, it was empowering. If I can do this, maybe other things aren’t so out of reach either.
Q. What is the hardest part of writing for you?
EDITING. I hate editing. I can write a book in a little over a month if I apply myself, but editing just drives me crazy. It amazes me how, after about six read-throughs, you can still manage to find errors. I’ve often entertained the idea that someone has hacked into my computer, toyed with the document, and laughed knowing it would confuse me.
Q. Do you plan any subsequent books?
This is a trilogy, so two more are planned. ‘Emblazed’ should be out early next year, and ‘Entwined’ will hopefully not be too far behind that. I’ve also written a Paranormal Romance novella that will probably be out in late October/early November. It’s a prequel for “The Division Chronicles” trilogy, so keep an eye out for that!
Q. What are you currently reading?
At the moment, my Kindle is open to a not-so-grand contemporary book, so I’ll be nice and not mention any names! I’m eager to start on ‘Crave’ by J.R. Ward though. It’s beside my bed. Waiting…
Q. Please tell us your latest news (book-related or not!).
Well, first off, I think I should point out that ‘Essenced’ is scheduled to be FREE on September 19th and 20th, so you should take a minute to stop by Amazon! Other than my writing news – the upcoming books and novella being the concrete things on that front – I’m also in the process of making a website for myself. I’m no technology whiz, so I can’t say how long the process will take. When it’s finished, I’ll be sure to post links on FB, Twitter, and my blog. Other than that, my graduate program starts back up next week. It’s okay if you’re not envious of that.
Q. Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
Thank you to anyone who takes the time to give my book a try. This is my first novel, so getting it attention can be an uphill battle. Whoever is willing to help with that through downloading the book while it’s free, buying it at some point, leaving a review, hosting me on a blog, telling your friends… Thank you! I’ll be having some giveaways in the not-so-distant future, but I have to wait until some of my swag arrives :) Anything in particular you’d like to see for swag, I’m open to ideas! Check out any of the links available to keep tabs.
