Publication Date: July 24, 2013
Synopsis: Going into outer space calls to Astronaut Brooke Jones like the sirens of old, and when the chance to be part of the first manned mission to Mars arises, she is ecstatic. But little does she know the fate that awaits her on the surface of the red planet or the results of her encounter when she gets back to Earth.
Interview: Q. Please tell us about the inspiration for your current release.
I’m an avid fan of things like the Science Channel and NASA television. With all the news in the last year about the Higgs boson and the ongoing search for what comprises dark matter and dark energy, I wanted to throw my own two cents into the theories of quantum mechanics. In no way am I a physicist, but since quantum mechanics still had a lot of holes in it, what better opportunity for a layman such as myself to espouse a crazy variation on the currently accepted versions. At the same time, I had been contemplating the concept of a hero theme for a novel. I threw in a couple of intergalactic gargle blasters, mixed, and out came my new novel, ‘The Infinite Within’.
Q. How did writing this book affect you?
Although this is my fourth release, as novels go this is the first where the main protagonist was a female. It was a challenge to look at things from her perspective.
Q. What is the hardest part of writing for you?
Is there an easy part? Not really. I find all the steps requiring the same effort. At the end of the day, if I’m to name one thing, it’s overcoming that final fear before publishing that asks the question, have I done all I can do to make this as good as it can be?
Q. What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?
This one’s easy. I don’t use dialogue tags. None. Nada. Zippo. Instead, I prefer to use actions to identify the speaker. It provides the reader with an image as to what is occurring while the dialogue is going on. Over my first couple of novels, my editor would make suggestions that resulted in some being put in and I would completely rewrite it. Her opinion at first was that a few tags wouldn’t hurt. I would rather spend the time to rewrite than surrender to what I consider the easy way out. As a result, the reader does not need to be inundated with reading he said – she said a thousand times throughout the novel.
Q. Do you plan any subsequent books?
I’m always writing. Currently, I have another epic fantasy in the works entitled, ‘Demon Stones’. It is set in the same world as my earlier release, ‘The Brotherhood Of Piaxia’. Like Piaxia, it is a stand-alone novel. It is set in a different country and has a whole host of new characters but there are a few crossovers. Time frame wise, ‘Demon Stones’ begins a year after Piaxia ends, but the reader will not need to have read Piaxia to understand what is going on.
Q. What are you currently reading?
As a new author, in my workshops I am always reading other works in progress like my own. I also beta read for a couple of authors, so my plate is usually full. Nevertheless, I still find the time to read the odd published novel, now and then. Currently, I’m reading ‘Surface Detail’ by Iain M. Banks.
Q. Please tell us your latest news (book-related or not!).
I just finished a three day tour of the universe and met several interesting aliens. They provided me with a great bunch of ideas for future novels!
Q. Please tell us a fun-fact about yourself!
I love to cook and enjoy experimenting with new recipes. Dinner at my house is often a venture into something different.
Q. Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
It is my hope they enjoy my writing. In my mind, there is no greater method of expanding one’s imagination than reading a good book.
