Synopsis: The Others–vampires, werewolves, things that go chomp in the night–don’t just live in nightmares anymore. They’ve joined with he mortal world. And for private investigator Shiarra Waynest, that means mayhem…
Have a one night stand with a vampire, and you can end up paying for it for eternity. P.I. Shiarra Waynest, an expert on the Others, knows that better than most. Yet here she is, waking up beside charismatic vamp Alec Royce with an aching head…and neck. Luckily, Shia has the perfect excuse for getting out of town–namely, a couple of irate East Coast werewolf packs who’d like to turn her into a chew toy.
On Royce’s suggestion, Shia temporarily relocates to Los Angeles. But something is rotten–literally–in the state of California, where local vampires are being attacked by zombies. Who could be powerful enough to control them–and reckless enough to target the immortal? Following the trail will lead Shia to a terrifying truth, and to an ancient enemy with a personal grudge…
Review: Shiarra Waynest is in for a heavy ride in ‘Forsaken by the Others’. Shia wakes up next to Alec Royce after a night of intimacy and is struggling with her feelings about what this step means for her personally and their relationship. She is also dealing with the aftermath of nearly being turned into an Other, but there are still some lingering effects, so she’s still worried if she’s in the clear. On top of all this, Shia’s bad decisions have made it impossible for her and Sara to stay on the East Coast for the time being. For their safety, Royce sends them out to L.A. to stay with a vampire with whom he’s struck a bargain. Yet none of them know they’re going to be walking into a huge crap-storm. Now Shia and Sara have to put all their investigative skills to the test to figure out the truth of the attacks on vampires in L.A. and it might cost them all they have left…
In ‘Forsaken by the Others’, Ms. Haines has not pulled any punches. Shia’s past sins are catching up to her and she’s beginning to realize the effect they have on other people beside herself. I really enjoyed the interaction between Shia and Analie’s family (see ‘Silent Cravings’ for more about Analie), it was a nice light moment within an action packed and intense story. ‘Forsaken by the Others’ is a wild ride, full of scheming plots (and schemes within schemes), old friends and new, and with a wicked twist of an ending!
