Synopsis: The Duck And The Doe is the tale of two immortal beings whose eternal love has soured a bit in the last two centuries. Written as memoir by the "hero," this novella is a musing on both what love is and how much America has changed since the early 19th century. The first volume deals with both the supernatural and the racism of the old American south. Told with humor and passion (and the occasional rant) the story of these strong characters, including a wealthy young lawyer and a clever courtesan, will change your idea of what "love forever'' really means.
Review: What would you do to save your soul mate? What price would you pay? In ‘Our Blissful Bayou Beginnings’, a young lawyer, Remi (known as Canard – the Duck), and his beautiful Bichette (the Doe) are lovers. However, Remi is betrothed to another and while in the early 19th century it was acceptable for a man of his station to have a mistress, it was not allowable for her to be ensconced in the manor. Yet Remi will not give up his Bichette and when she is murdered, he will do anything to bring her back. Even employ the services of a deep bayou witch. Remi and his Bichette are reunited, but at a heavy cost.
‘Our Blissful Bayou Beginnings’ is told in a journal-like format, with Remi’s unique humor and insight into his past and the changes the hundreds of years he’s been alive have wrought. He and his Bichette have an interesting relationship, which draws them together and apart over and over again. I enjoyed Remi’s style of storytelling and his interesting insights into his own behavior and human behavior at large. While he can be mostly content, his Bichette is flighty and wandering, starting new scams or outlandish plans every decade or so. Of course, there is the matter of the dark magic which binds them together. They must consume a human heart once a month or waste away, their souls still trapped in desiccated bodies until the end of time. ‘Our Blissful Bayou Beginnings’ is a short story, but packed full of magic, adventure, and the search for the meaning of love by someone who may not have known what it truly meant to be together forever. Ms. Peterson has written a delightfully poignant and fascinating tale!
