In order to avert her sister’s visions, Magda must battle SS werewolves, wizards, and demons, including the one who has possessed a willing Adolf Hitler.
Book 1: LADY LAZARUS - ADVENTURE, ROMANCE, AND MAGIC ON THE EVE OF WORLD WAR II
Summer 1939: In Budapest, the magical city where East meets West, beautiful, young Magda Lazarus has managed to make a life for herself in a dangerous world that teeters on the edge of war. But then her sister has a terrible vision: Nazi Germany overruns all of Europe, and their family and millions of others are exterminated.
Magda, the last of a long line of witches descended from the legendary Witch of Ein Dor, must find the secret of her family's magic. Alone, pursued by SS werewolves, a Nazi wizard, and demons, including the one that has possessed a willing Adolf Hitler, she has no choice but to summon the family's guardian angel, the dark keeper of secrets Archangel Raziel.
And when she stands in his celestial presence, her heart is utterly, completely lost…
"An absolutely unique protagonist in an engaging tale set against the backdrop of the greatest clash of good and evil in human history. What's not to love about LADY LAZARUS?" -Jim Butcher, #1 NYT Bestselling Author of THE DRESDEN FILES
Book 2: DARK VICTORY - THE REMARKABLE SECOND STORY IN THE LADY LAZARUS TRILOGY
Magda Lazarus was a reluctant witch, until the dire threat of Nazi Germany convinced her to assume the mantle of her family's ancient powers. But though this young, beautiful woman has fought Hitler's werewolves and the demon who would rule through the Fuhrer, she has been unable to prevent the outbreak of World War II.
There is still a chance of saving the millions slated for destruction, but Magda knows she cannot fight the Nazi supernatural war machine alone. With the power to summon an army of spirits, Magda stands with her guardian angel Raziel in a battle against the human and unholy forces of evil arrayed against her people and all of Europe.
Magda is desperate to win at any price, but the victory she seeks may be at the cost of her soul…
"The best entry yet in a groundbreaking, rich, enthralling series set in the darkest days of World War II with magic, very human characters, and stakes that couldn't be higher. A tour de force!" -Rachel Caine, NYT Bestselling Author of the MORGANVILLE VAMPIRE series
Book 3: REBEL ANGELS - THE THRILLING CONCLUSION OF THE LADY LAZARUS TRILOGY
Magda Lazarus, the Witch of Budapest, has returned from the dead time and time again to fight the Nazia' devastating conquest of Poland. To prevent the Holocaust her sister has seen in terrible visions, Magda will need the Heaven Sapphire, a gem powerful enough to defeat even the demon Asmodel. With the future of all Europe in the balance, Magda and her beloved, the angel Raziel, begin a perilous journey to the Caucasus, the resting place of the fabled stone.
Surrounded by Nazis, Stalinists, and wary Azeri tribesmen, Magda must summon all of her magic to battle her supernatural foes. But more dangerous yet is the power of the Sapphire itself, which could stop Hitler -- or destroy Magda.
At the end of this long road Magda's epic quest will end…in love and redemption, or with annihilation. REBEL ANGELS, the climactic book of the LADY LAZARUS trilogy, filled with suspense, magic, and action, will have readers on the edge of their seats until the riveting conclusion.
"REBEL ANGELS is a satisfying, powerful conclusion to a series that is as moving as it is thrilling. Rooted in a compelling version of history, peopled with unique and intriguing characters, the tale of Magda Lazarus combines the action of a modern urban fantasy with the atmospherics of CASABLANCA. With this final volume, Michele Lang establishes herself as one of the leading voices in historical urban fantasy." -D.B. Jackson, author of THIEFTAKER
Interview with a vampire:
Michele talks to Count Bathory, Vampire Lord of Budapest:
Michele talks to Count Bathory, Vampire Lord of Budapest:
A note from Michele:
In order to interview the terrifying Count Bathory, Chief Vampire of the city of Budapest in 1939, I had to travel out of our world and into a murky demi-monde. As I slipped out of our time and into a beautiful city on the edge of total war, I left the world of cell-phones, computers, and the digital behind.
Count Bathory is a denizen of the world of LADY LAZARUS, a trilogy I wrote. Bathory is the fanged employer of the main character, a witch of Budapest named Magda Lazarus.
This world is a place of great beauty and danger. Bathory's chief center of business is the Café Istanbul, meeting place of vampires. Gilded, gorgeous, decadent, and deadly to mere mortals.
I entered with Bathory's protection but still shrank away from the creatures lurking in the shadows. I found Bathory at his customary table on the mezzanine, up the curving staircase, with a panoramic view of the main dining area below.
Bathory sat with his back against the wall, I suspected so that nobody magical could sneak up on him. After mastering my fear and simple nervousness -- after all, I was meeting the magical master of the fanged ones of Budapest -- I managed to make my introductions and sit down for our interview.
But I made sure not to look at Vampire Lord Bathory directly in his eyes! I don't know much, but at least I do know that a stare directly into the eyes of a vampire will lead to thrall and a swift death. ~ML
ML: It is an honor to meet you, Lord Bathory. May you please share an introductory remark for the mortals reading this interview?
LB: Lovely children, do not fear the night. Your life is so fleeting, embrace the darkness for within it you will find protection, from creatures fearsome and full of hunger for light. I am the Lord of Vampires in the city of Budapest, and you may find me any evening at the Café Istanbul, inside the Ring Road, within the city's heart. Should you need my protection, you will find it here.
ML: Is this the kind of protection you offered Magda Lazarus when she first encountered you?
LB: (sighs, takes a long pause) Ah, my little chicken. I suppose you know, then, that Magda Lazarus was once my assistant, and now is something much, much more.
My divine, deadly witch. Magda Lazarus broke my heart again, and again, and again. No mortal before her could say the same, though I suppose she is not pure mortal, is she? No living creature with the power to cheat death can claim simple mortality.
Magda can escape death with her magic. But part of her longs for death, dances with death. She is very Hungarian, and very much a witch. She does not need any protection from me, not any longer. It is I who am her slave.
ML: What do you think of the world situation as of 1939?
LB: (laughs, a low, terrifying sound) The world is mad, and it is about to explode. True, that is the general state of affairs, but not since Napoleon has the world seen a human being so intent on destroying all that he cannot conquer.
To be quite honest, child, I am surprised that the world has managed not to immolate itself before now. I do not have the gift of prophecy…Magda's little sister Gisele is the one for that. But it does not take a seer to see that we are all in terrible, terrible trouble.
ML: Ah, I wish you well in the great war that is about to erupt. Do you have any final words that you wish to share with your mortal readers?
LB: I will end with a warning and a benediction. Love is cruel. It has a ravenous appetite that it cannot satisfy, it will take every last ounce of your spirit and your life. But love is also an angel. Like Magda's fine, handsome angel Raziel, love will demand you heed its call, and will serve as a messenger from the higher emanations. Heed that call, dear children. Bare your neck to love, and give every last drop of your life to embrace it.
Okay! Thank you Lord Bathory for those vampiric words of wisdom :-)
