Synopsis: Society still finds itself reeling from magic coming out into the open. As the world comes to grips with the fact that old legends are true, Homicide Detective Alison Kaur still has a job to do. After the corpse of William Lanner is found, Alison must delve into the ugly world of prostitution, gangsters and murder. All while she and her partner deal with the dangers of Mages, Werewolves, Succubi and others. Will Alison be able to track down the killer of William Lanner? Or will she become a victim herself?

Review: As society is dealing with the fallout of magic coming out of the broom closet and the range of species Humans thought were just tall tales a very strange homicide comes across the desk of Detectives Kaur and Hughes. Based on the findings on the body, the police departments signs a contract (Pactum) with some Vis (magic) users to keep the detectives safe and perhaps assist them with the case. As the case deepens and more pieces fall into place, Alison and Sean may be caught in an all out war.

I was drawn into the author’s world with ease and as I followed Alison deeper down the rabbit hole, I enjoyed this story immensely. The varied species (Human, Mage, Succubi, Goblin, etc.) and the different twist on magic (called Vis) helped to paint a vivid picture of a world perhaps in the future. The plot flowed along, picking up steam along the way and you get caught up with all the action. I thought the character dynamics were great. I feel ‘Pactum’ is a great story blending both magic and police procedural. As the story goes on, the characters grow, develop, and reveal a lot of their pasts which enhances the plotline. I am very interested to see where this series goes next!
