Author Interview:

 Q. Please tell us about your current release.

Star, thank you so much for taking the time to have me on your site.

My current release is called Pactum. The story takes place in modern day Denver and is fantasy. The story is about two detectives working on a murder investigation involving magic, which has only been out in the open for a few years. The case takes many twists and turns as the detectives work with two Mages. Pactum combines elements from several different genres and sub-genres. You have Mages, which are like wizards and witches, as well as paranormal elements like Vampires and Trolls, and in the mix you have detectives trying to work a case.

Q. How did you come up with the idea for your book?

I wanted to try my hand at writing modern fantasy and I’ve always wanted to write a book that is a crime drama. On top of that I thought it would be fun to write a book with Vampires, Trolls, Succubi and the likes. I know that’s a lot of stuff to want to write about, but when I came up with the idea for Pactum those were all of the things floating in my head and they just happened to combine perfectly together.

Q. Can you tell us about the journey that led you to write your book?

I had a lot of fun working on Pactum. I spent a lot of time interviewing a friend of mine that was a police officer for over thirty years. It was like learning about a whole different world. From department politics to how the system works to how many elements in the criminal world work. Some of the most enjoyable parts of working on Pactum were listening to stories that he would tell about the city. I’ve lived in Denver my whole life but found myself learning about a side of the city that I don’t see. I also interviewed other people to get an idea for what life would be like for some of the characters in Pactum. All in all it was a blast writing the book.

Q. If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything about the book?

When I built the story world for Pactum I had to come up with details about all of the different races in the book. I have Humans and Mages but all of the other races like Vampires and Werewolves are referred to as Mutari. For each of the Mutari races I came up with complex cultures and histories, and I would have really liked to show more of that in Pactum. I didn’t include some of it in the interest of pacing the story.

Q. What was the hardest part of writing your book?

For me the hardest part of working on a book is just working on it. I’m not a writer that can binge and write ten thousand words in a day, I have to be in the mood to write. So for me a lot of the time the hardest part is just sitting down and making myself type.

Q. Do you have a musical playlist you listen to when writing? If so, what kind of music?

Yes, I have many playlists that I listen to. I’m always looking for new writing music. Towards the end of Pactum I started running across some gamer type dark classical music that is perfect for writing action. When I have the right music playing my writing flies.

Q. What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I have to visualize a chapter in my head. So I tend to pace around the house talking to myself, acting things out and playing little movies in my head again and again. Of course my favorite place to look like a total loon is in front of our front room window. I’m sure my neighbors think I’m a total nut case.

Q. Do you plan any subsequent books?

Yes, Pactum is the first book in a series called the Contractor Series.

Q. Please tell us your latest news.

Other than the release of Pactum I don’t have a huge amount of news, I’m just trying to hunker down and get Seeker, the next book in the series, written.

Q. Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Just thank you so much for all of your support and emails. I love talking to readers, it never gets old and it’s a blast finding out what people think of my work and if they are writers themselves what types of projects they like to work on.
