Synopsis: Meet Stan Markowski of the Scranton PD's Occult Crimes Unit

"Like the rest of America. Scranton's got an uneasy 'live and let unlive' relationship with the supernatural. But when a vamp puts the bite on an unwilling victim, or some witch casts the wrong kind of spell, that's when they call me.

My name's Markowski. I carry a badge.

Also, a crucifix, some wooden stakes, a big vial of holy water, and a 9mm Beretta loaded with silver bullets..."

Review: Hard Spell is the first in a new occult fiction series that easily reminds me of watching old episodes of Kolchak: The Night Stalker - except Stan's a police detective instead of a reporter. Stan Markowski is a no-nonsense straight shooter type of cop with a very dry and dark sense of humor. The rest of the characters are very well-developed and made realistic by the creative hand of Mr. Gustainis. Hard Spell is a gritty noir hard-boiled detective adventure where the monsters are real (and not sparkly), the crimes are bloody, and the good guys may not always win. This is definitely a book I will read over and over again!
