Tory Brennan, the fourteen-year-old niece of acclaimed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, is the lead of a ragtag band of teenage "sci-philes" who live on a secluded island off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina. When the group rescues a dog that's been kidnapped for medical testing on nearby Loggerhead Island, they are exposed to an experimental strain of canine parvovirus that changes their lives forever.

As Tory and her friends discover their heightened senses and canine-quick reflexes, they must combine their scientific curiosity with their newfound physical gifts to solve a cold-case murder that has suddenly become very hot - if they can stay alive long enough to catch the killer's scent. Fortunately, they're more than friends: they're now a pack. They are VIRALS.

Review: From the author of the Temperance Brennan novels, comes a story about her great-niece, Tory. Tory lives with her dad, who is a scientist, and she aspires to be just like her Aunt Tempe. After Tory finds an old military dogtag, she and her friends sneak into the lab to use a machine to clean it using sonic vibrations. While they're there, they find one of the wild wolfdogs in another lab and take him with them. What they don't know in this case can hurt them - the wolfdog has been infected with a new strain of canine parvovirus...which is transmitted to them. As they work to uncover the mystery of the dog tag, they also are working through the unexpected side effects of the virus. The answers to both mysteries are shocking!

I love Kathy Reichs' Temperance Brennan series and her foray into the teen world is a wonderfully engaging and unique addition. I loved the characters and Tory's definitely a Brennan - following in her aunt's footsteps by being methodical and logical. The mystery keeps you guessing until the very end and it's totally engrossing. While Tory is logical and has a scientific mind, she's also fiercely loyal, headstrong, and passionate. I can't wait for the VIRALS' next adventure!
