Guest Blog: Reviewing Smexy Style

I invited a couple of my favorite bloggers to stop by and blog about how they write reviews...Smexy was gracious enough to stop by...make sure to visit her blog and show some love.

First I want to say thank you to Monica for asking me to guest post today. Just as everyone has different reactions and opinions on books, I feel the same attitude is addressed to reviewing. My main objective when I sit down to write a review is obviously to let my readers know whether this book is worth picking up. It’s funny because I forget sometimes that people read what I write. I know that sounds silly because I write a public blog – but it hits me when I receive an email from someone telling me that they bought a book based on my recommendation. I then break into a full sweat to see if they agree with me or not. So, for me, being honest in a review is essential. If I don’t give a book 4.5 or 5 stars, there is a reason. And I think it is important to relay that information to the readers. I also think being respectful is extremely important. Authors are very hard working individuals. I am not going to like every book I read – and I munch on Rolaids when I post a negative review. But that is just part of the game.

I think I also have a bit more of a laid back style at Smexy. If I love a book, I am going to gush and pimp it out to everyone I know. I love to talk about the men, and all the hot smexy action – I mean come on, we are reading romance!

One of my quirks when I read a book, is to use post it notes to mark plot points or quotes, or just situations in the book I find enjoyable. After I finish the book, I immediately sit down and write my summary and thoughts out. Later, I go back through each sticky note to make sure there wasn’t something I wanted to talk about that I forgot. There are some out there that find my post it note practice a little…odd. But it has become second nature. I have to do it while I read. I tend to read a couple of weeks ahead of when I am going to post the review, so it gives me plenty of time to make sure I have everything in there I want to talk about. I am slightly OCD when it comes to planning and scheduling and that really helps me keep the blog organized and on track.

I love that there are so many different styles of reviews out there – short, long, funny, straight to the point. I hope after reading one of my reviews, you get a feel for the book, whether positive or negative and I hope you find many books with a lot of Smexy action!
