Arthurian Legend

Today I am going to tell you about my love affair with Arthurian Legend. It all started with one little book...

I read it when I was 15, and I have never looked back. Let me share a bit about my early teens (14.15). I was in the midst of trying to figure out who I wanted to become, balance school, my reading obsession and my growing love for Paganism. After reading 'The Mists of Avalon' by Marion Zimmer Bradley an entire world opened up, I realized how vast the literary world is and it only kept going up. The next book that affected me deeply is...

'A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court' by Mark Twain was one of the first literary classics I ever read, and one of the greatest Arthur Fiction books ever. I HEART IT. I started to grow more and more in love with a world where there are chivalrous men, a leader who cared about his people before himself, a man that is perfect but can still somehow be betrayed by those he loves. I just love everything about King Arthur, his knights, and his ideals. I love reading new spins on the legends too. I have a whole bookcase dedicated to my Arthur obsession!

Here are a few more Arthurian Legend books that I have fallen in love with over the years:

Be careful though, I warn you, once you fall in to Arthurian Legend you will be hooked for life! Make sure to check out the other King Arthur books others are obsessed with at Alpha Heroes!

  1. I loved Arthurian legend when I was younger and haven't looked into more... you've sparked my interest again! Thanks!

  2. I love Arthurian legend too!! I always have :) My favorite version is Once and Future King!

  3. I had actually never read any Arturian legend but I plan to now. Thank-you for peeking my interest! I also want to let you know I think your blog is absolutely gorgeous! I found it on the bloggers group on LT! And I am glad I did!

  4. Yes...I too am an Arthurian legend fanatic. The Mists of Avalon is one of my favorite books and it still remains the preeminent Arthurian book...IMO. Have you read Mary Stewart's Merlin series (The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills, The Last Enchantment, and The Wicked Day)? These were also great Arthurian reads. I plan to reread them someday!

I have Pendragon's Banner by Helen Hollick. I need to get The Kingmaking. I also thought I had The Once and Future King, but I checked my library catalog and I guess I don't so I'm going to have to be looking out for that one.

Great post Monica! I'm going to head over to Alpha Heroes and see what's what!

  5. Ahhh, Arthurian Legend - the fabulousness of it will never cease to amaze me! :-)

  6. I remember reading that when I was young too! Yes - that will start you on reading "magic"! :)

  7. Mists of Avalon is one of my very favorite books, but I've never read the Twain book ... must give it a shot one day.

  8. Reading this blog reminds me of an author I know, Angelica Harris. Her most recent book, Excalibur Reclaims Her King, is the story of a modern day mother sent back to 6th Century to heal Merlin and raise King Arthur from the dead. Much of her own life's healing came from writing about her heroine, Arianna. Check our her website and books
