Book Review: The Wives of Henry Oades by: Johanna Moran

The Wives of Henry Oades: A Novel (Random House Reader's Circle)
Summary: For Margaret Oades, everything changes when her husband, Henry, accepts a bank post in New Zealand and she and their children follow him from London to exotic Wellington. But a single night of tragedy shatters the family when the native Maori stage an uprising and Margaret and the children are abducted and presumed dead. Grief-stricken, Henry travels to Berkley, California, where he eventually marries a young widow with a new baby...only to have his first wife and children show up soon after, alive and having finally escaped captivity. (this is the synopsis from the back of the book)

I haven't read much historical based fiction recently, and was glad for the mix when this book arrived. Johanna Moran writes with incredible imagery; I almost felt like I was in the book with the characters. The website states that this book is based on the original court case of the Oadses in the early 1900's. I would never have thought to write a book on a court case, so that alone was unique to this book. I enjoyed reading this, the plot, character development and everything was well written and smooth. The only reason I gave it a four out of five was because this particular court case is really of no interest to me, but I have no doubt it will be for others. This is Johanna Moran's debut novel, and I am excited to see what else she writes in the future.
